Do you think a totalitarian big brother regime that controlls big data and information with the new networking engineering possibilities as 5G will be the ordinary model for governance?
Data is both a national security as well as a personal matter. Preserving it should be constitutional on the national level, and people (the owner of the data) should be the only controller of it, making sure it is well preserved.
With the upcoming 5G and the great bandwidth and between 40 to 100 times faster then 4G possibilities it offer, your control over your private information and data will not be any more a privilege, you are out their virtually naked. Of course, 5G will bring us great advantages that we would have never thought, convienance like you never imagined. Yet with this futuristic fantastic era we are about to embark, comes a great responsibility of protection our data.
The problem is, when governments install a nation wide firewall -as a way of national security and personal data protection, without constituting a mechanism of data handling- they may slip into being a George Orwell 1984 totalitarian big brother regime.
Taking into account a quick comparison of my view on the Chinese and European model. The Chinese is already slipping into said regime, with the current surveillance system they deploy up to Wechat and the upcoming great more power to the government (as well as companies, institutions and the people) with the 5G which they already deployed in certain places. In one hand Chinese data -thanks to the Chinese firewall- do not leave the country. On the other hand the Chinese government have full control over this data even deploying a social credit reputation system, welcome big brother.
In Europe, the European Commission have the end of 2020 as a deployment date for the EU, and already published a document "EU Toolbox for 5G security" where they briefly demonstrate their measures, strengthening on security measures for network operators (ensuring a multi vendor strategy), maintaining a diverse and a sustainable 5G supply chain, and security measures standardisation and EU-wide certification schemes, of course while maintaining the current privacy and security measures.
While the EU and the US are runned by democracies (backed by political agendas of course), yet the Chinese tide is reaching nations who are re-identifying their allegiance, introducing the Chinese model of a big brother regime, sold as national security measures to the people.
I would say a Chinese model of data control will prevail sooner or later, yet, it is the question of how far governments will go in which side of the governance spectrum.
